1. Background Printing - One example of a background process where the printing takes place whilst the computer is processing other tasks.
2. Background Processing - A process where by the computer executes the printing process in the background allowing the user to continue with other tasks at the same time.
3. Banding - Substandard printing that affect the graduation of colors resulting in distinct bands of colors on the page. This is usually caused by improper alignment, or clogged nozzles in the print head.
4. Bar Codes - Printer codes comprising vertical lines (bars) of different thickness used for fast error free data entry. Some examples are to identify specific products, or identifiy a specific shipment, or such like.
5. Baseline - The base line upon which most of the letters in a font sit.
6. Baud Rate - The rate of data transfer from one machine to another via a serial interface. In this case from the computer to the printer.
7. Best Quality - Printing documents at high resolution, usually 600 10 1200 dpi, that results in smooth graphics and clear text.
8. Bidirectional Printing - A printing technique whereby ink is applied to the printing surface as the print head is moving in both directions thus speeding the printing process.
9. Bidirectional, bidirectional communication - The ability for machines to communicate sending and receiving information at the same time. In this case, for the PC send a document to the printer and the printer to report back on progress. Also called bitronics.
10. Binary - The number system used by computers comprising only two digits, or base 2.
11. Bit - Short for binary digit, the smallest unit in a binary system.
12. Bit Depth - The number of bits used to create a digital images which affect the amount of color or gray variation information present in the image. More bits equals more variation, less bits equals less variation.
13. Bitmap - BMP - The file format whereby a value is ascribed to every pixel on the screen as opposed to vector mapping where only the differences is stored. Bitmaps, also call raster images, are very large files. Some audio formats also use bitmapping.
14. Black - In essence, the total lack of light that results when an object absorbs all available light with no reflection. True black is not possible using only cyan, magenta and yellow and so the "four color process is used in today's printer with the fourth color being black. This is also termed CMYK with K representing Black instead of B which denotes blue in RGB.
15. Blank - An empty and unassembled printer cartridge.
