11 terms found.

1. Feathering or Wicking - A component of print quality, feather is the tendency for deposited ink travel in uneven patterns into the projected surface. In normal circumstances, this is when the ink follows the contours of the paper with the amount of feathering dependant on the viscosity of the ink and the grain of the paper. Excess feathering or wicking causes the printing to appear unclear and fuzzy.

2. Filtering - The process of removing unwanted particles from the ink which would otherwise clog the print head and render the printer damaged.

3. Fixed Spaced - A family of fonts where the inter-character spacing is fixed and so all characters have the same width.

4. Flocculation - Undesirable coagulation or clumping of pigment particles in an ink formulation. Would quickly lead to nozzle clogging.

5. Font - A collection of characters and symbols of the same basic style or design for use in graphics and visual computer programs and printing activities. Fonts can be either Bitmapped or Scalable and stored in the computer of in the printer itself.

6. Font Cartridge - A plug-in device specific to a particular printer that contains additional fonts thus allowing a greater selection of fonts for printing.

7. Font Characteristics - The various attributes used to describe fonts, including symbol set, spacing, pitch and/or point size, style, stroke weight and typeface family. All of these together determine what the font actually looks like.

8. Font family - A collection of font faces, usually with a cohesive design, to be used together. Some common examples are Arial, Garamond and Helvetica where the regular font is joined by variations such as Bold, Semi-Bold, Italic, Narrow, Condensed, and so on.

9. Font Width - The measurement of the horizontal spacing of each character within a font which is used to determine how many characters are able to fit on a given line. Also known as Font Metric.

10. Four Color Process - The CMYK process of printing that results in an acceptable color spectrum.

11. Frequency or Drop Rate - A term describing the speed at which the print head can print, typically 2-5 Khz (2000-5000 drops/second) for inkjet cartridges.
