1. Image Processing - The process, some would call it an art, of capturing and manipulating visual images for the purposes of enhancement or information extraction.

2. Image Resolution - The definition of the number of pixels per unit length of an image. Some examples are pixels per inch, pixels per millimetre, or simply pixels wide.

3. Impact Printer - A type of printer whereby the characters are formed by the impact of either pins or preformed characters onto the ink ribbon and pressing it against the paper. Dot Matrix and Daisy Wheel are two types of Impact Printers.

4. Impulse Ink Jet - The term describing piezo drop-on-demand inkjet print heads as distinct from valve jet drop-on-demand systems.

5. Initialize - To set the starting conditions of software or hardware to predetermined values.

6. Ink - A liquid, usually water, and usually with a dye although pigmeted inks are becoming more popular. Inks may also be based on alcohol along with other chemicals.

7. Ink Jet Printers - Printers which spray ink onto the receiving substrate in a series of dots to form characters. The basic principal is that of heating the ink to form a bubble and then force it through the jet whereupon the bubble cools and bursts onto the paper. The standard and quality of Ink Jet Printers is improving all the time where currently they are capable of near photographic quality at far cheaper costs than laser jet printers..

8. Interface - A device or component used to transfer information or signals between devices and/or programs, often with a signal conversion in the process. Printer interfaces are either Serial or Parallel.

9. Interface Cable - The physical cable used to connect a peripheral device such as a printer to a computer for the purposes of data transmission.

10. Internal Fonts - Default fonts resident in the printer's memory from the factory.

11. International Colour Consortium - (ICC) An international group established in 1993 for the purpose of creating and promoting color management standards to foster the evolution of an open cross platform color management system architecture.

12. Interpolation - To insert intermediary values based on surrounding values. In printing and scanning terms, the process of increasing perceived resolution by calculating the values for additional pixels based on the surrounding pixels.

13. ISO - International Standards Organization

14. Italic - A version of a font that slants to the right, often used for empasis, quotations, or to indicate an alternate space/time.
